Remembering Peter Ebling

Peter served as the secretary of our club for the past few years and was an invaluable member. We hope to honor Peter and continue service to the community as he has for many years. He will be greatly missed.

“Beloved father, grandfather, teacher, and volunteer, Peter Woodman Ebling, affectionately known by his children as “Dubs”, passed away peacefully on February 6th at the age of 79. Mr. Ebling’s inspiring life began on November 28, 1944 in Summit, NJ son of Ruth and Will. He grew up in East Hartford, CT and also Cotuit, MA. While in Cape Cod, Mr. Ebling loved to sail and attend Cotuit Kettlers games with his brother David, sisters Laura and Susie, his cousins John, Judy and Barbara Murray, and his neighbors Jody, Kerry, Bunker, Dake and Mary. Cotuit held a special place in Mr. Ebling’s legacy and memories.

Mr. Ebling attended Hobart College from 1962-66. He would remember these days as the most fun that he had in his life. He was a humanitarian who lived his life spreading knowledge, wisdom, and love. During his twenties Mr. Ebling spent two years living in the “Truk District” of Micronesia where he “taught school and built a school to teach in. I also worked in a lot of community development projects and a health program, but mostly I fished.”

Following his experience in the Peace Corps, Mr. Ebling began his illustrious teaching career that spanned over four decades. Most notably, Mr. Ebling taught at Montclair Kimberley Academy where he was renowned for his academic rigor and high standards established for himself and students alike. He also coached soccer, basketball, and tennis. Mr. Ebling’s strong personality positively influenced countless students throughout his career.

In the latter years of his life, “Dubs” immersed himself into serving the Essex County community, which he loved so much. He was secretary for the Montclair, Clifton, Bloomfield, and Glen Ridge Kiwanis Clubs. The Kiwanians provided fellowship and purpose for Mr. Ebling as he continued to spread positivity through initiatives such as food distribution, clothing drives, and preparing for the annual Memorial Day picnic. Mr. Ebling was awarded the George F. Hixon Fellowship, signifying the highest honor given in the Kiwanis Club. He was a special person who dedicated his life to service, teaching, and above all spreading values and lessons that will be cherished by those who were in his presence. Mr. Ebling was a passionate New York Giants fan and he was happy to see his beloved team beat the Eagles in his last game.

Mr. Ebling is survived by his children Matthew, Kira, and Peter and his grandson Jackson. A service will be held at The Old Canal Inn, 2 East Passaic Avenue, Nutley, NJ on February 17 at 1 PM. Please join us to celebrate an incredible person. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Democratic Party or your local Kiwanis club.”
